Sanna to ride Russian Emperor and Senor Toba in Dubai on Super Saturday

He won the H.H. The Amir Trophy aboard Russian Emperor in Qatar on February 18 and now Italian jockey Alberto Sanna will get the chance to chase success on two Hong Kong-trained horses at Dubai’s Super Saturday meeting this weekend.

As well as reuniting with Douglas Whyte’s Russian Emperor for the Group One Jebel Hatta (1,800m), Caspar Fownes has confirmed the one-time Hong Kong-based Sanna will partner Senor Toba in the Group Two Dubai City Of Gold (2,410m) on Saturday night.

Both Russian Emperor and Senor Toba have settled in well in Dubai after making the trip across from Qatar, with the latter – who finished seventh behind the former in the H.H The Amir Trophy – travelling as well as he has been since departing Hong Kong.

“The horse seems to be a lot better from Doha to here. His bloods weren’t perfect in Doha, but we couldn’t be happier now,” Fownes told the Post from Dubai. “He’s eating well, and we’d be disappointed if we weren’t in the first three this weekend.”

All being well, both gallopers will then be targeted at the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic (2,410m) on World Cup night at Meydan on March 25, with Fownes confirming Sky Field will also make the trip to contest the Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) should he come through a trial in good order next Tuesday.

Closer to home, in-form jockey Keith Yeung Ming-lun will try to keep his winning streak alive at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

After snapping a 54-ride run of outs aboard $19 chance Amazing Boy at the city circuit last week, Yeung booted home the Me Tsui Yu-sak-trained Fortune President at $52 at Sha Tin on Sunday, and he likes his chances of delivering the goods for a third straight meeting.

“It’s been wonderful. The results show I must be doing the right thing, the horses are responding well and I’ve never lost my confidence, even on the long shots,” Yeung said.

“I always get myself well prepared and ready for the races, but when you’re not on the best horses, it’s hard to get results.

“I think it’s looking good on Wednesday night. I’ve got a couple of runners with chances. Happy Jai Jai has got a good barrier again, and if things happen for him, he’ll be a chance.

“Happy Daily has been honest and it looks like the Happy Valley 1,650m suits him better. The Sha Tin races were just too strong for him. I think he likes the track, the distance suits him, and with a good barrier, I think he’s a good chance too.”
