Scary Nurburgring crash as ambulance rushes to scene after car smashes into wall

An ambulance has rushed to the scene of a major accident at the Nurburgring Nordschleife after a car ripped through a metal barrier. Recovery teams were seen working around the damaged Porsche Cayman after the heavy accident during the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. 

Screenshots also showed tyre carcass lying on the right hand side of the circuit just a few hundred metres from the crash site. Repair teams were later spotted arriving to fix the damage with still more than three hours to go in the event.

Due to the massive nature of the circuit, race organisers didn’t suspend the race with a Code 60 introduced instead. This is used regularly during endurance events to slow down vehicles near the incident alone while allowing racing to continue elsewhere.

Vöhringer is sharing the Cayman with Sébastien Carcone, Axel Duffner and Max Lamesch. Vöhringer and Carcone have plenty of experience on the circuit having competed in the Nurburgring Endurance Series.

Ahead of the race, team boss Daniel Shellhaas claimed the race was the “toughest in then world”. He explained: :The excitement and anticipation for the 24-hour race is very high every year.

“It’s not without reason that it’s considered the toughest endurance race in the world and the weather in the Eifel in particular always ensures that the cards are reshuffled.

“We have three strong driver crews in our Porsche Cayman GT4 and of course we want to bring them all to the finish line on Sunday afternoon and finish on the podium.”
