Sergio Ramos ‘rejected Arsenal move’ before sealing PSG transfer after Real Madrid exit

Sergio Ramos turned down the opportunity to join Arsenal before completing his move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer earlier this month, according to reports. The veteran defender left Real Madrid at the end of last season, calling time on a 16-year association with the Spanish giants.

Ramos is widely regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever central defenders, but was unable to agree a new contract in Madrid and decided to seek a new challenge ahead of next season.

A number of top European clubs were linked with his services, including the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Inter Miami were also credited with an interest, but Ramos eventually opted to join PSG, who have already confirmed the signing of Achraf Hakimi and look set to follow up with the addition of Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer.

He penned a two-year deal with the French heavyweights ahead of next season’s bid to pip newly-crowned champions Lille to the Ligue 1 title.

However, it seems as though Ramos’ situation could have played out very differently had Arsenal managed to achieve European qualification last season.

The Gunners submitted an offer to the player’s representatives, but their proposal was flatly rejected by the Spaniard, according to Goal.

The report claims that Arsenal were keen to land Ramos in order to strengthen their defensive ranks ahead of next season.

An approach was made following his departure from Madrid, with his entourage ‘intrigued’ by the idea of a move to north London.

Despite this, Ramos opted to snub the chance to link up with Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium because Arsenal will not be playing in the Champions League next season.

DON’T MISS

It is said that the Gunners offered the defender a two-year deal worth around £15million per season, but the opportunity to join PSG was simply too good to pass up.

Ramos also turned down an offer from Premier League champions Manchester City, who promised a contract until the summer of 2023.

The move would have seen the World Cup winner join New York City FC for another three years after the conclusion of his spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Ramos helped Real to clinch four Champions League titles and five La Liga trophies during his time at the Bernabeu.

Speaking after his move to PSG was confirmed earlier this month, he revealed his excitement at the project that lies ahead and declared that he is looking to add to his trophy cabinet with additional triumphs in the French capital.

“The best place to keep on dreaming, the best club to keep on winning,” said Ramos in a post on social media.

“We’re going to fight with everything we have for everything. Allez.”

He later added: “Paris Saint-Germain is a club that has already proven itself at the highest level.

“I want to continue to grow and improve at Paris and help the team to win as many trophies as possible.”
