With Shazam! Fury of the Gods hitting theaters soon, Zachary Levi has discussed his place in the DCU and how his character shares similarities with Deadpool.
Fury of the Gods sees Levi reprise the role of Shazam opposite Asher Angel, who plays Shazam’s teenage alter ego. Levi recently sat down with SFX Magazine to chew over his second outing as the loveable superhero and explain why he might be DC’s answer to Deadpool.
“I love that we get to be the most subversive of all the DC characters, almost like the Deadpool of DC,” Levi commented, per GamesRadar. “Deadpool gets to sit outside of it and comment on it all and have fun with it all – obviously in a more R-rated, mature way. We do the same thing, just a little more family-friendly!”
Levi expressed his appreciation for being able to play “one of the most interesting and entertaining characters in comicdom.” He spoke about the fun he had in bringing Shazam to life and trying to capture the duality of the role in his performance as the muscle-bound superhero.
“Most heroes are adults and they’re mature and they’re brooding and all of these things,” he noted. “Very few of them get to balance that with the fact that they’re actually a kid and they’re still learning how to drive, let alone be a superhero. That paradox creates such a really fun, interesting, enjoyable sandbox to play in.”
Director David F. Sandberg is back behind the camera for the sequel, helming from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. The film is produced by Peter Safran, the new co-CEO of DC Films alongside James Gunn who is helping to usher in a new era of storytelling for DC.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is expected to be a “special part of the DCU going forward,” so you might want to pay special attention to the sequel when it hits theaters on March 17.
