Sheffield Wednesday in ‘greatest comeback ever’ as Owls come from 4-0 down

Sheffield Wednesday in ‘greatest comeback ever’ as Owls come from 4-0 down

Sheffield Wednesday completed a sensational comeback against Peterborough in the League One play-off semi-finals on Thursday night, coming from four goals down to level the tie in the 98th minute before going on to win on penalties. The Owls were 4-0 down after the first leg but produced the goods at Hillsborough in exhilarating fashion to take the game to extra time with some already labelling it as the ‘greatest comeback of all-time’.

Peterborough looked to be coasting to the play-off final after taking a dominant win at home last Friday. Wednesday looked to be dead and buried after a drab display but turned things around in the second leg.

First-half goals from Michael Smith and Lee Gregory gave the home fans hope that a comeback could be on the cards and Reece James’ strike halfway through the second half kept them in the fight.

However, hope looked to be waning as the clock ticked down as the Owls passed up a number of opportunities in the dying minutes.

But there was one more twist. Marvin Johnson’s ball into the box was poorly defended by the Peterborough backline and long-serving full-back Liam Palmer was able to turn home to take the tie to extra time.

Twitter user @dhxzz0 summed up the mood. They wrote: “Wednesday could’ve just pulled the greatest comeback in the playoffs ever! Crazy crazy game of football to watch.”

There were more dramatics in extra-time too. The Owls looked to be physically and mentally spent after their effort to get back into the game and Peterborough took advantage, making it 4-1. Posh controlled most of the half and took the lead through a Gregory own goal on the verge of half-time to send the away fans into raptures.

In one of the most chaotic games in recent memory, the drama wasn’t finished there either. Just when Peterborough looked to have gained a semblance of control on proceedings, Wednesday countered and made it 5-1 to pull level again on aggregate. Callum Paterson found himself in space in the box and slotted home at the second time of asking.

Penalties ensued. Wednesday were clinical from the spot scoring each of their five penalties as Dan Butler was the unlucky player to miss for Peterborough. Versatile Owls star Jack Hunt was tasked with the final spot-kick, placing it calmly beyond Posh keeper Will Norris to seal the win and spark a wild pitch invasion at Hillsborough.

The Owls had initially been the favourites to progress to the final having finished third on 96 points and will now have all the momentum going into the showpiece at Wembley on Monday 29th May.

Barnsley or Bolton will be the opposition with their tie finely poised at 1-1 ahead of their own second leg on Friday night.
