Sheffield Wednesday vs Wycombe stopped due to medical emergency in crowd

The League One match between Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers was halted on Saturday due to a medical emergency in the crowd. The game kicked off at 3pm, but 29 minutes into the first-half, in which Wycombe were leading 1-0, the referee paused proceedings when it became clear there was an incident involving a supporter.

The players were led off the pitch as medics rushed to the scene to treat the fan.

And ten minutes later they returned to action after the supporter involved had received care.

The Wednesday official Twitter account posted just before 3.30pm: “Play has stopped at Hillsborough, as the medical teams from both clubs are called to the North Stand.”

They later added: “The players are out on the pitch and we are back underway..”

It is not yet clear exactly what happened, but the incident seems to be a similar one that took place in the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Tottenham earlier this season.

That game was also paused after a spectator collapsed, with Spurs players Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon calling for help from the referee and medics after spotting the issue.

The supporter had suffered a cardiac arrest, and a defibrillator was used before he was later taken to hospital.

Fortunately, he made a full recovery, and was discharged from hospital last month.

Sky Sports pundit David Ginola spoke passionately that day about the importance of having defibrillators readily available at stadiums.

He said: “Having a defibrillator helps massively. Having people in the stands as well, being able to perform CPR, helps massively because waiting for the defibrillator, you need to perform CPR and, at the end of the day, we should all be informed to perform CPR to help each other.

“Luckily [the fan] is surrounded by a lot of people, he is in the stadium and obviously we have a defibrillator around.

“But if anything happened like that at home without anyone around or any defibrillator, it would be a major problem.”

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit in eighth place in the table, with Wycombe top.
