iPhone 15 series’ USB Type-C port will be fairly limiting

According to a new report, Apple’s self-developed USB-C for this year’s iPhone 15 lineup will come with an authenticator chip, which allows Apple to encourage customers to buy genuine iPhone peripherals. In other words, users will only be able to connect Apple-approved accessories with the iPhone 15 lineup, even though the upcoming flagship iPhones are supposed to have a “universal” USB Type-C port.

While this might not sit well with everyone, the move will potentially help Apple tackle counterfeit and malicious third-party accessories. Plus, it will help the brand make more sales of its own accessories. For those unaware, the current iPad models ship with a much-more standard version of USB Type-C, as they don’t contain any IC chip for authentication. This necessarily means that the iPhone 15 lineup will be the first by Apple to feature this new customised port.

Another report by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 series will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds, which are the same as the brand’s current Lightning port. The iPhone 15 Pro models, on the other hand, are said to get faster transfer speeds, so the major difference between the Lightning port and the new USB-C port for the standard iPhone 15 models appears to be just the changed shape and dimensions, at least for now.
