The often mild-mannered Si Jiahui punched the table after a frustrating collapse in his World Snooker Championship semi-final clash with Luca Brecel. Brecel came back from 14-5 to win 17-15 in one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the Crucible, much to the dismay of his adversary.
The Chinese sensation got off to a tremendous start on the first day of their tie extending his advantage from 10-5 to 14-5 with breaks of 90, 132 and 97. However, Brecel came back well with runs of 108, 60, 66 and 53 to claw back the following five frames and close the first day at 14-10.
After missing a shot at 14-9 which allowed Brecel to take advantage of the frame, Si, who had calmly dispatched his opponents one by one during the early rounds, punched the snooker table in anger.
And he was unable to maintain his composure as Brecel went on to win seven of the final eight frames on day two in a historic comeback victory that will be remembered for years to come.
Only two other players have ever overturned eight-frame deficits to win at the Crucible – Ken Doherty in the 2003 final against Mark Williams and Dennis Taylor over Steve Davis in 1985.
Brecel now progresses to the final against the winner of Mark Allen and Mark Selby in the other best of 33 frames tie.
En route to his semi-final battle with Si, Brecel dumped world No1 and defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan out of the competition with a 13-10 triumph in the quarters.
Yet prior to this year, the Belgian hadn’t won a single match in his five previous outings in Sheffield despite becoming the youngest-ever player to compete in the tournament back in 2012 as a 17-year-old.
