Sky Sports are reportedly bringing an end to the cult TV series Soccer AM at the end of the season with staff said to be ‘raging’ at the news. The popular sports programme has gone through major changes over the years, being cut down to just 90 minutes long and popular hosts leaving for pastures new.
Ratings have fallen in recent years though and The Sun claim Soccer AM will not return next season, bringing an end to the comedy talk show when the current season finishes. Staff were reportedly informed of the decision from Sky bosses with a round of redundancies set to be made in May.
A source said: “It was a complete bombshell. Morale is at an all-time low, they are raging.
“It’s going to be an interesting watch over the next few weeks.”
The long-running sports show first aired back in 1995 and proved an instant hit with viewers. The original presenting line-up consisted of Russ Williams, Jane Hoffen, Gary A. Stevens and Helen Chamberlain, the latter of whom would stay on for 22 years.
Chamberlain was joined by Tim Lovejoy a year later with the show becoming synonymous with football fans all over the UK for the start of the football action on weekends. Made famous by it’s engaging skits, iconic segments and noteworthy guests, Soccer AM was arguably the most recognisable sports programme throughout the country in its heyday.
