snapdragon: Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset – Times of India
Qualcomm has announced the new flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which is likely to become the next default chipset for the Android flagships until the next one comes out. And it is joined by a rather modest Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features the Cortex-X2 prime core clocked at up to 3.2GHz. And the other two clusters are 3x Cortex-A710 performance cores running at a frequency of up to 2.8GHz and 4x Cortex-A510 cores with a clock speed of up to 1.8GHz. Also, this one is fabbed on TSMC’s 4nm node process.
Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will bring 10 per cent faster CPU and GPU performance. Also, the sustained performance of the chip is said to be improved as well, meaning that the chip won’t throttle much as the temperature rises. And Qualcomm’s new top-of-the-line chipset will be 30 per cent more power-efficient than its predecessor, consuming about 15 per cent less power for an extra hour of gaming. There is about 20 per cent better AI performance per watt.
The rest of the specifications are pretty much the same as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.. It supports display up to QHD+ at 144Hz or 4K at 60Hz, with HDR10+ support. And the phones running the chip can have Up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. And the chipset comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.
The chipset is paired with the Snapdragon X65 modem, with peak speeds of up to 10Gbps. Also, there is Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, including support for aptX Lossless and Bluetooth LE Audio.
The triple Spectra ISP is back with support for up to 200MP sensors and 8K video capture at 30fps, and 4K at 120fps. Further, it comes with features such as multi-frame noise reduction and staggered/DoL HDR, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is expected to arrive in the market in Q3, sometime between July and August. As usual, all Android OEMs will be releasing a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered flagship in the coming months. The list includes Asus, BlackShark, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, RedMagic, Redmi, and Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE.
