Solo Leveling is a South Korean webtoon (also called a manhwa) that first began as a web novel in 2016 written by Chugong. The webtoon is set to receive an anime adaptation, that will release in January 2024.
Solo Leveling is widely known for its action-packed fantasy setting, and is one of the most renowned webtoons, known even by those outside the webtoon community. The webtoon adaptation began publishing in March 2018 on KakaoPage, which was illustrated by Jang Sung-rak, who is known as Dubu. It finished in December 2021 and has received a side-story.
What is Solo Leveling about?
Solo Leveling is a dungeon system webtoon, a highly popular genre where characters engage in dungeons, leveling up and honing their skills to advance deeper into the dungeons.
Solo Leveling follows the story of Sung Jinwoo, residing in a world where human warriors known as hunters have gained supernatural abilities following the emergence of “gates” a decade ago. These gates serve as portals to a different dimension inhabited by monsters, and hunters are tasked with defending humanity by battling these creatures. Jinwoo, in contrast, is a notably feeble hunter who faces considerable challenges in his line of work.
In a fascinating turn of events, Jinwoo is selected by a program known as the “System” through a quest window. This occurs after his party faces near annihilation in a double dungeon. The System designates him as the sole player, which is the origin of the story’s title. He gains the power to enhance his strength level and has the unique ability to transform those he defeats into devoted minions, referred to as “shadows.”
This marks the beginning of Jinwoo’s journey as he defeats foes, even humans, and delves deeper into the understanding of his newfound powers and their origins.
Solo Leveling’s anime adaptation
An anime adaptation of Solo Leveling was announced for a 2023 debut at the Anime Expo in 2022, with A-1 Pictures producing it. However, the premiere has been pushed to January 2024. Most recently, A-1 Pictures worked on Kaguya-sama, Lycoris Recoil, Nier: Automata anime, and Mashle: Magic and Muscles.
The Solo Leveling anime will be directed by Shunsuke Nakashige, who has previously directed Sword Art Online, Keijo, and Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory. Noboru Kimura is writing the script, who has worked on the Princess Principal films, Gangsta, and Problem Children Are Coming from Another World, Aren’t They? Hiroyuki Sawano is handling the sountrack for Solo Leveling. Sawano has provided musical scores for Attack on Titan and The Seven Deadly Sins, to name a few.
Crunchyroll will stream the anime outside of Asia.

The opening theme is performed by popular K-pop group Tomorrow x Together
Solo Leveling’s opening theme song is performed by the popular K-pop group Tomorrow x Together (TXT) in collaboration with composer Sawano. TXT described the song as having a dark and heavy atmosphere that captures the strength of the main character.

Sawano said that the song is designed to emphasise the rhythm. Each member of Tomorrow x Together showcases their vocal talents on this rhythm, making the song even more potent.

Solo Leveling’s premiere will get screenings in theatres
Solo Leveling’s first episode will also be screened in theatres starting December. Currently confirmed locations for the screening include Tokyo, Seoul, Los Angeles, India, and Europe.
