Someone paid over Rs 11 crore for a Nintendo Super Mario game from 1996 – Times of India

A perfectly sealed copy of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 console that was launched in 1996 went under the hammer recently and fetched $1,560,000 at Heritage Auctions in Texas, US. The prize money translates to over Rs 11.6 crore and is perhaps the first game to sell for over $1.5 million. Recently, The Legend of Zelda claimed an auction price of $870,000 while a copy of Super Mario Bros sold for $156,000.
The Super Mario 64 was the best selling game for the Nintendo 64 console and worldwide nearly 33 million units of the console were sold.
Video game auctions have quite a big thing recently with people ready to pay millions on classic games like Super Mario. Heritage Auctions described it as the ‘highest graded copy of Super Mario 64–Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed, N64 Nintendo 1996 USA.
The website of Heritage Auctions said, “Well — we’re a bit speechless on this one. What can we even say that would do this copy the justice it deserves? The cultural significance of this title and its importance to the history of video games is paramount, and the condition of this copy is just so breathtaking that we’re really at a loss here. If you have had your heart set on obtaining the highest graded copy of the single best-selling video game on the Nintendo 64 — the first 3D adventure of Nintendo’s mascot, Mario — we only have one piece of advice: this is not an opportunity to waste.”
Apart from classic video games, vintage Pokémon cards are also in demand. Back in 2019, a pack of Pokémon trading cards fetched $1,07,000 (around Rs 76.25 lakh) at an auction. The winner had to outbid 12 contenders. These Pokemon cards happen to be from 1999 when the first set of Pokemon cards were printed in English. The pack had 103 cards in perfect condition with the first edition Charizard.
