Sony announces PS5 price rise for select global territories

‘Global economic environment’ cited as cause

In something of an unprecedented move, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it is officially raising the retail price of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) hardware. The consumer shelf cost for the powerful console will increase in select territories, including Europe, Japan, and Canada.

The news was announced in a new blog post by SIE’s Jim Ryan, wherein the President & CEO cited the “Global economic environment” as the key reason behind the price rise.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing,” wrote Ryan. “We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.”

The new PS5 console prices in these districts are as follows:

Europe: (around €50 rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99

UK: (around £30 GBP rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99

Japan: (around ¥5,000 rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)

China: (around 400RMB rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan

Australia: (around $50 AUD rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95

Mexico: (around 1,000 pesos rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499

Canada: (around $20 CAD rise)
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

Industry analysts have already shared their thoughts on SIE’s decision, noting that, due to the general scarcity of hardware, slowed production cycle and the global cost of living crisis, it is unlikely that the price rise will have much of a negative effect on the overall sales of PS5 hardware nor Sony’s target sales for the remainder of the fiscal year. Already cheaper than the PS5 platform, Microsoft’s response to this move — regarding its own hardware, Xbox Series X/S — will no doubt be an interesting one.
