Sony Is Developing PS5 Wireless Earbuds – Report

Sony could be expanding on its line of audio hardware, as a report claims that the PS5 manufacturer is working on new earbuds and wireless headsets.

According to Insider Gaming, Project Nomad is a set of earbuds that will offer up to five hours of battery life, comes with its own charging case, and can be recharged via USB-C when plugged into the PS5 console. It’s worth noting that Sony already offers several lines of earbuds, some of which contain noise-canceling technology similar to the bigger headsets sold by the company.

Sony’s other headset, which reportedly has the codename Voyager, is said to offer similar functionality to the Inzone H7 headset. It’s claimed that both headsets could launch by the end of Sony’s 2023 financial year, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. A new State of Play event is rumored to be scheduled for next month, which would be an ideal platform to reveal the existence of these new headsets.

Sony’s main offering in this space for the PS5 is the Pulse headset, which launched alongside the PS5 back in November 2020. Since then, a number of third-party manufacturers have begun offering wireless and wired headsets for the console, and a few companies like Razer and Logitech have wireless earbuds up for sale. On the hardware side, 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for Sony as PSVR 2 arrives this month and its rumored that a PS5 with a detachable disc drive will also be launched.

After two years of struggling with supply constraints, Sony declared at CES 2023 that the PlayStation shortage is essentially over. “Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward,” PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said on stage. Sony also confirmed last month that the PS5 has now reached 30 million units sold globally, with December 2022 being the PS5’s biggest month of all time for sales.
