Sony PlayStation Boss Shares His Views on Live-Service Games

PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida believes that the gaming industry being dominated by live-service games is “boring” for him. This statement comes in the midst of Sony pushing to double its live-service games in 2023. They’ve also announced plans to launch 12 live-service games by 2025.

However, Yoshida shares a different ideology about live-service games. He told The Guardian, “The games industry will never cease to be a fun place. The industry keeps growing and growing, and I hope it keeps supporting and chasing creative ideas and people who try to work on new things.”

“You don’t want to see the Top 10 games every year being almost the same, all games becoming service games,” he added. “That would be a bit boring, for me.”

Sony recently acquired developer Firewalk Studios and said that the studio will help them achieve the announced live-service games target alongside their other studios like Haven Interactive and Bungie.

The company has big plans for this year as they’ve just launched Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores DLC.

Guerilla Games also casually confirmed the sequel to Horizon Forbidden West when announcing a new role for their studio director and executive producer Angie Smets as head of development strategy.

Final Fantasy XVI will later be launching on June 22 for the PlayStation 5. As for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it’s set for a release in Fall 2023.
