Sony PlayStation to Invest More in PC and Mobile Titles as It Outlines ‘At Least One Year’ Gap Between Console and PC Launches and More

Sony PlayStation’s focus on PC and mobile is going to increase as PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst has said that there is a possibility for the company to invest further in these spaces.

Hulst also said that the company will stay committed to single-player games, despite diversifying its portfolio to include live service games.

The company may also look towards being involved in producing movies and television shows based on From Software games.

More mobile and PC

Speaking to Reuters, Hulst said, “Further investments in areas that will strengthen the expansion on to PC, on to mobile and into live services, that’s definitely a possibility for us.”

This comes after Sony announced in August that it will commit to expand into mobile gaming via the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. The company also acquired Savage Game Studios for “a AAA mobile live service action game”. Sony announced back in May that releasing titles on new platforms was now a key part of its strategy.

Speaking about Sony’s investment in From Software, Hulst said: “You should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost, but it’s also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities.”

Single-player games to keep coming

As Sony also pushes into the live service space, Hulst assured players that the company will remain committed to single-player games as well.

“We have a history and a reputation for building these incredible narrative-driven single-player games, such as The Last of Us and Horizon and the upcoming God of War Ragnarok,” Hulst told Axios in an interview.

“Some of our biggest titles in the single player narrative-driven space are also our most profitable titles,” he added.

The company is also still interested in the PS4. “We certainly don’t want to forget the millions of active players on PS4, and we want to ensure there are great games for them as well. We’re evaluating it on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

Juggling between platforms

Hulst also spoke about future PlayStation games coming to PC, revealing that titles will come “at least a year” later after their console release, barring live service games.

“I think going forward we’ll see at least a year between releases on PlayStation and on the PC platform, possibly with the exception of live service games,” Hulst told YouTuber Julien Chièze.

“I think it’s been really great for the developer teams to see their wonderful creations also being released on PC, often with the help of our newly-acquired team here at Nixxes in the Netherlands. They’re more players, and I think that’s helpful.

“I think going forward we’ll see at least a year between releases on PlayStation and on the PC platform, possibly with the exception of live service games.

“Live service games are a little bit different in nature because you want to have a strong community, strong engagement right away, right when you go live, so we might – in the case of our live service offerings – go [for] day-and-date [releases] with PC and the PlayStation platform.”
