NEW DELHI: The Indian contingent at the Special Olympics World Summer Games has continued its impressive performance, surpassing the 50-medal mark in Abu Dhabi. SO Bharat, the Indian team, has secured a total of 55 medals, including 15 gold, 27 silver, and 13 bronze across five different sports: athletics, cycling, powerlifting, roller skating, and swimming.
On Wednesday, India added to its medal tally with remarkable achievements in swimming and cycling.
In swimming, the team clinched five medals, including three golds, one silver, and one bronze. Diksha Jitendra Shirgaonkar, Pooja Giridharrao Gaikavada, and Prashaddhi Kamble displayed exceptional performances to win gold medals, while Madhav Madan contributed with a gold in the 25m freestyle event. Sidhanth Murali Kumar secured a bronze medal in the 25m freestyle category.

In cycling, every member of the Indian team earned a medal. Neel Yadav initiated the success by winning a bronze in the 5km road race. This was followed by gold medal victories in the 1km time trial by Yadav, Shivani, and Indu Prakash. Kalpana Jena and Jeyaseela Arbutharaj secured silver medals, further boosting India’s overall standing.

Another notable achievement came from Sonepat’s Saket Kundu, who won a silver medal in the mini javelin Level B event. Kundu, a multi-sport athlete from Little Angels School, has previously competed in table tennis, figure skating, and athletics at the national level. Although his hopes of representing India at the 2023 Special Olympics World Winter Games were dashed due to its cancellation, Kundu showed resilience by transitioning to mini javelin. His silver medal marks India’s first-ever medal in this event, making it an extraordinary feat for both Kundu and the nation.

The Indian contingent’s outstanding performances reflect their determination, skill, and unwavering spirit. Their achievements at the Special Olympics World Summer Games serve as a source of inspiration and pride, showcasing the remarkable talents of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
