Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse CinemaCon Footage Features a Grounded Miles and Gwen Stacy
Sony Pictures has shared 14 minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at CinemaCon and it featured an extended look at the relationship between a grounded Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and his parents.
After releasing the first 15 minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at 2022’s CinemaCon, this year’s show treated the audience to new footage of the film that is set to swing into theaters on June 2, 2023.
While we will not reveal any major spoilers from what was shown at CinemaCon, the most spoiler-sensitive readers should proceed with caution from this point.
The footage begins with Miles Morales sitting in his room as he was recently grounded. We see he has a drawing of Gwen Stacy in his notebook as he lays back, puts on headphones, and begins listening to music.
Gwen then opens a portal to visit him and begins teasing Miles about his collectibles still being in the packaging and opens one up. She then sees the drawing of herself in his notebook and asks, “Is Spider-Man grounded?”
The pair then break out of the room and go web-swinging across Brooklyn. Before they can return, Miles’ parents enter his room to find it empty, and his father promises to add three more months to his grounding.
We cut to Gwen telling Miles that she and the other Spider-folk from various dimensions are trying to stop all of the dimensions from collapsing in. “Again?” Miles asks.
After she mentions a mission to a Shakespeare universe, we see Gwen and Miles walking around the Williamsburg Bank building. Gwen talks to Miles about how she hasn’t spoken to her father since he escaped her universe because he thinks she killed her best friend, even though she didn’t.
They then look out at the city upside down and talk about their friendship, their similarities, and Miles is clearly trying to hold her hand.
“In every other universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man. And it doesn’t end well,” Stacy says.
“Well, there’s a first time for everything,” Miles responds.
Next, Miles and Gwen are seen in civilian clothes and at a festival where Miles’ parents are. Gwen says there’s no room on their elite squad for him and that he should stay home with his family. Gwen is also seen with a wristband that keeps her from glitching and one that alerts her of something that causes her to excuse herself.
Miles, who is now sad that Gwen left, is left with his Mom and the two have a quiet chat that appears to be the one where he was going to reveal he is actually Spider-Man. However, he stops himself as his Mom tells him to go find Gwen and to promise her that he’ll never forget about the little boy he was and to be careful out there.
“Just… Don’t get lost,” Miles’ mom says wistfully. “When you come back, you’re still grounded. I’ll see you later – with a gift.”
And with that, the footage was over.
