Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: One of the Most Terrifying Spider-Variant Was Scrapped From the Movie
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a movie full of references, easter eggs, and cameos from all things Spider-Man. There are many spider variants featured in the film with iterations from comics, animated series, movies, games, and even LEGO. While many of the different spider variants made it to the final cut, one of the most terrifying variants only made it as far as concept art.
Man-Spider in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse could have included the Man-Spider in the movie. For those unfamiliar with this variant, Man-Spider is a version of Peter Parker, who turned into an actual spider with eight eyes and had 6 arms. This version of Peter Parker is mostly known for his appearance in the Spider-Man animated series from the 1990s.
Character and costume designer Kris Anka revealed on Twitter the concept art for Man-Spider for the movie. Anka said that Man-Spider was his “absolute favorite designs” for the movie, but he “unfortunately didn’t make into the film.” He also revealed that the terrifying iteration would have served as a funny reference instead. The concept art reveals Man-Spider as a cafeteria cook for the movie. Anka said that he pitched Man-Spider as “the Spider Society cafeteria cook because (of) his arms.” The concept artist even drew some props for Man-Spider as the cafeteria cook.
Some would agree that it would have been funny indeed to see Man-Spider in that manner. At the end of the day, it is probably best that Man-Spider was not there. He still looks terrifying to me.
