Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s Reported Runtime Would Break an Animation Record
Spidey may have a little extra runway for web-slinging time next month as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse eyes a runtime that would break a Hollywood animation record.
A report from Collider highlights the AMC Theatres listing, showing Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse clocking in at 2 hours 19 minutes. For an animated film, that’s a lengthy showing and would make it the longest-ever from a major Hollywood studio.
Lengthy live-action superhero movies may be the norm, but the same isn’t true for animation – especially those produced in Hollywood. In 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse clocked in at just under two hours with its 117-minute runtime. Across the Spider-Verse is almost an extra half hour, though still shorter than some animation not originating in Hollywood, like Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.
IGN reached out to Sony for confirmation but has yet to hear back. Regardless of length, the next Spider-Verse feature film debuts June 2, 2023, to plenty of fanfare. This year’s CinemaCon featured an extended, 14-minute Across the Spider-Verse preview between Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Miles’ parents.
Though it exists in its own continuity, YA novel Araña and Spider-Man 2099: Dark Tomorrow holds some tangential importance to the series. A recent interview with novelist and writer Alex Segura explained some character parallels and even touched on a surprise cameo.
As for those still catching up, IGN had plenty to say on 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse in a 9/10 review: “Miles Morales’ journey from zero to hero is brought to life with jaw-dropping animation, whimsical callbacks to previous Spider-Man media, and memorable side characters from the multiverse.”
