Spotify: Spotify is shutting down another service, second this month – Times of India
Music streaming platform Spotify is closing down Heardle. For those unaware, Heardle is the Wordle-inspired music guessing game that the company acquired in July last year for an undisclosed sum. At the time of its acquisition, Spotify said that Heardle would remain free to play for everyone. The Wordle-inspired music guessing game offers players six tries to guess a popular song — but instead of typing in different letters to form words, players listen to a song’s intro to guess the artist and title. This is second service that Spotify is shutting down this month. Earlier this month, Spotify said that it is shutting down its live-audio app ‘Spotify Live’.
Goodbye note
“Thanks for playing Heardle, but unfortunately we have to say goodbye. From May 5, Heardle will no longer be available. If you have stats that you would like to save, make sure you go to your stats and take a screenshot by May 4th. It won’t be possible to access them after May 4th” the company said in its goodbye note to the setvice.
Why Heardle is shutting down
According to a report in TechCrunch, the Spotify says that it is shutting down Heardle as it aims to focus on its other objectives around music discovery. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Heardle as we focus our efforts on other features for music discovery,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying. The report further said that the decision to shut down Heardle was made because Spotify wants to focus more of its emphasis on music discovery through recent app updates, rather than off-platform Wordle-inspired activity.
“After a period of experimentation and learnings around how Spotify users interact with live audio, we’ve made the decision to sunset the Spotify Live app,” a Spotify spokesperson said on the company pulling the plug on ‘Spotify Live’. However, the company said that it will continue to explore ‘live’ features on its main platform.
