There’s a disturbance in the force that is the Star Wars universe, as the popular Lucasfilm IP has found itself in legal turmoil.
The Disney-owned studio has been slapped with a lawsuit by Karyn McCarthy, who was signed on as a producer for the franchise’s latest Disney+ show, The Acolyte. The show’s set during the end of the High Republic era, and it features a cast of actors like Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-Jae, Manny Jacinto, and more.
McCarthy was brought on as a producer for the series. However, she has now filed a suit against Lucasfilm for wrongful termination of her contract after a few weeks of work.
According to legal documents obtained by Deadline, McCarthy was in high demand last year, as she was pursued by Lucasfilm for The Acolyte, and Apple for the Colin Farrell-led series, Sugar. Eventually, she took up the former option in April 2022,
McCarthy claims that she and Lucasfilm had agreed upon a “broad strokes” agreement, as she soon got to work on the series. However, two weeks later, Lucasfilm stated that it “wanted out of the deal.” By then, McCarthy had lost a lucrative opportunity to work with Apple on Run, as the series had moved on to find another executive producer.
Despite missing out on a massive opportunity, McCarthy understood that things can end up like this in Hollywood. However, when she approached Lucasfilm for the compensation she was owed for all the work she did do for The Acolyte, the studio denied having made an agreement with McCarthy. Furthermore, the former Ballers producer was later offered $5000 as pay for a single day’s work, which she rejected for being insulting.
McCarthy has now taken Lucasfilm to court for the studio’s “bad faith denial” towards the agreement it had with the former The Acolyte producer.
