Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Will Still Have ‘Real’ Stakes Despite Being Child-Friendly

The co-creator of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the upcoming Disney+ show with a predominantly young core cast, has promised the project will have significant stakes despite being aimed at a younger audience.

Talking to Empire, Skeleton Crew co-creator Christopher Ford discussed how Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke of her approach to Amblin movies she produced, such as ET and The Goonies. “The way Kathy explained Amblin to us was that they never thought of those as kids’ movies. They just happened to have kids,” he explained.

That seems to be the philosophy being used for Skeleton Crew. “All the stakes are as real as possible: the kids think they’re in Andor,” he said.

Jude Law has been cast as a mystery character alongside newcomers Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. “They need guidance, but they’re vulnerable,” Law said of the children he’ll be traveling with throughout the show. “And so throughout, the people they meet, you question all of them. Is my character nice? Is he not? You just want them to be alright and get back home. But if you know Jon and Chris’ work, you’ll know that the kids aren’t always safe.”

At last month’s Star Wars celebration, we spoke with Kathleen Kennedy who told us that Skeleton Crew is “aimed at younger kids, but will still bring in the fans, still bring in adults.” While that may be the case, this promise of “real” stakes, along with an exciting collective of directors (including Everything Everywhere’s Daniels, The Green Knight’s David Lowery, The Mandalorian’s Bryce Dallas Howard, Beef’s Jake Schreier, and Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung) it seems as though Skeleton Crew could very well capture that all-ages sense of adventure that Amblin films embody.
