Star Wars: The Acolyte Is ‘Frozen Meets Kill Bill’, First Details Revealed
During a panel at Star Wars Celebration, we finally received new details on the upcoming series The Acolyte.
The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland took the stage at Star Wars Celebration’s Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel to discuss the upcoming series, citing some unpredictable inspirations behind the show.
“I really wanted to delve into the Star Wars universe and tell the story of this entire world that I loved so much from the perspective of the bad guys,” Headland said. “What I pitched to Kathleen [Kennedy] was Frozen meets Kill Bill. Shockingly, she didn’t kick me out of the building… This is when the bad guys are outnumbered. They are the underdogs. I’m really excited for you guys to see things you haven’t seen in live action yet.”

Headland also teased that she “went back to George [Lucas]’s inspirations of martial arts films” when planning The Acolyte, and that she drew inspiration from Kurosawa films.
The Star Wars Celebration panel also hosted an exclusive clip of The Acolyte. The clip started with a voiceover: “Close your eyes. Your eyes can deceive you.”
The teaser also showed Lee Jung-jae’s character saying, “The Force is powerful. It is a power we must respect.” We see Amandla Stenberg’s character in a fight, aliens, Jung-jae leading a bunch of Jedi, and Jodie Turner-Smith’s character saying, “This isn’t about good or bad. This is about power and who is allowed to use it.” The teaser ends without a release date, just saying “2024”. The Acolyte is still filming, but is set to wrap up shooting next month.
Jung-jae shared his excitement surrounding being a part of the Star Wars universe, and teased a little bit about his role.
“I play the Jedi Master,” Jung-jae said. “It was the first time of me touching a lightsaber and I’m still shaking from the experience… I’m also a fanatic for Star Wars and my heart is jumping because I’m with the Star Wars family being with you all today.”
Set during the final days of the High Republic Era, The Acolyte is set over a century before the events of The Phantom Menace. Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae and Amandla Stenberg are set to lead the series.
