Steam: Valve Platform Unavailable in Select ISPs Across Mumbai
Late last week, users of Alliance Broadband in West Bengal raised alarm when they discovered that their ISP had temporarily blocked access to Steam websites. According to user feedback, gamers were unable to access websites such as the Steam community, inventory, and profile pages through their internet connection. This hindered the user experience for players on the Valve platform, although they were still able to play their downloaded games.
A few hours after the issue came to light, Alliance Broadband lifted the temporary ban. However, a similar problem arose with GTPL, another ISP based in Gujarat. We have contacted both Alliance Broadband and GTPL to seek clarification, but as of now, we have not received any responses.
To make matters worse, the problem has now emerged in Mumbai, with users in the Indian metropolitan city lodging complaints about experiencing the same problems with their ISP.
The issue appears to originate from local ISPs, as users of major broadband and telecom operators have not reported any such ban. However, it is improbable for this to be a localised problem, as it is highly possible for these ISPs to impose the ban based on a government directive.
Additionally, Valve has not provided any statements regarding the ban on Steam webpages by specific Indian ISPs. We have reached out to Valve for clarification, but we have not yet received a response from them.
Additionally, IGN India has also reached out to Steam’s regional partner in India, Nodwin Gaming and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for further clarification on the issue.
