Steelers’ Trai Turner spits on Marquel Lee, gets ejected from game vs. Raiders

Trai Turner was spitting mad in the Steelers’ Sunday meeting with the rival Raiders. And so, the Pittsburgh guard spit on Las Vegas linebacker Marquel Lee in the third quarter of the game.

The confrontation came at the 11:15 mark, following a 25-yard touchdown reception by rookie running back Najee Harris. Video replay shows Turner arguing with an official before turning around, walking to Lee and spitting in his face, setting off a scuffle.

Since the foul occurred after the play, it did not take the touchdown off the board. Indeed, an unsportsmanlike penalty by Solomon Thomas offset the penalty and ended up costing the Raiders no yards. Regardless, Turner was ejected from the game.

Without Turner in the game, the Steelers managed just 50 yards on their next three ensuing drives: 9 yards on a three-and-out, 30 yards to set up a 56-yard field goal and 11 yards on the final play of the game.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spoke on the incident following the game, saying a Raiders player spit in Turner’s face first. He added that he’s “not a young guy” and a “flat-liner,” suggesting he was provoked to spit in Lee’s face. He later said he didn’t believe he should have been ejected:

The Raiders ultimately won 26-17 over the Steelers.
