Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has pleaded with the new Saudi-led consortium to give him a chance to lead the club out of trouble. Mike Ashley sold his shares in the business for £300million and the new bosses will look to bring the glory days back to St James’ Park.
Bruce has managed 999 Premier League matches but there are strong reports that he will be axed during the international break.
Newcastle are not in action until next Sunday when they host Tottenham in the Premier League.
But the current manager does not want to be relieved of his duties.
“I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do,” Bruce told the Telegraph.
“But you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them.
“New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.
“That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way. I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.
“If I don’t make it to a 1,000 games against Spurs, you might say that could only happen to me, but I don’t think it would be cruel. It’s just football.”
Bruce joined Newcastle in July 2019, taking over the reins following fan-favourite Rafael Benitez’s departure.
“I think whoever took over from Rafa, it was going to be tough,” Bruce added.
“I don’t think people wanted me from the start, in the local media and the fans. It has been incredibly draining emotionally at times, very hard.
“Not just for me but for my whole family, who are all Geordies and who are all Newcastle fans.
“Some of the things written and said about me, the abuse on social media, I’m just glad my parents were not still alive to see and hear it because it would have broken their hearts.
“This was their home and their people. This was their city, it is where I’m from and where I always wanted to return.
“But as tough as it has been, I’ve tried to enjoy it as much as I can. And you know, almost everyone I’ve met in person has had nothing but good wishes. They’ve all urged me to stick with it and said good luck.”
New Newcastle chief Amanda Staveley refused to back Bruce when she was quizzed on his position..
“I did speak to the manager, said hello and introduced ourselves,” Staveley said. “We look forward to speaking to him over the next few days.
“There’s an international break now, everyone is just relieved at getting some rest before the Tottenham game.
“We’re very supportive of Steve, we’ve spoken to him and what we won’t do is talk about him or players, we’re going to do a review of football operations, commercial side of the club, we’ll come back and make some decisions.
“I’m not able to talk about anything as to players or managers at this stage.”
