Steven Gerrard lands new job in first role since being sacked by Villa

Steven Gerrard has landed a new role working as a pundit for Channel 4 – his first formal position since being dismissed as manager of Aston Villa. The former England international was relieved of his duties back in October and has since been enjoying some rest and relaxation with his family back home on Merseyside.

It’s been a whirlwind start to Gerrard’s managerial career having previously relocated to Glasgow to take charge of Rangers before moving to the Midlands when replacing Dean Smith.

Now The Mail are reporting that Gerrard has been tapped up by Channel 4 to join their punditry team for coverage of England’s European Championship qualifiers.

The Three Lions face off with Italy on Thursday in Naples before hosting Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday, March 26.

Gerrard looks set to become part of their coverage in what could prove to be a major coup for the broadcaster.

The report also adds that former England Lioness skipper Jill Scott will also be part of the team alongside Gerrard’s ex-Liverpool team-mate Joe Cole.

Ex-England skipper Gerrard played 114 times for his country, scoring 21 goals.

Since leaving Aston Villa, Gerrard was briefly back working with BT Sport during their coverage of Liverpool’s 5-2 defeat against Real Madrid.

Gerrard is understood to have recently held extensive talks with the Polish FA about the prospect of taking over their national side.

The shock move failed to materialise though as Gerrard reportedly rejected the chance to work with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and his former Villa player Matty Cash.

He is not thought to be among the names in the frame to take over at Crystal Palace following the sacking of Patrick Vieira.

Roy Hodgson, who managed Gerrard with England, is believed to be the front-runner to return to his old club on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Gerrard will also be back on the pitch later this month when he features for Liverpool legends against Celtic in a charity game during the international break.

Sadly for the 42-year-old, his stock in managerial circles has plummeted in the past few months due to the work carried out by Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

Since the Spaniard was appointed last year, only Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have claimed more points in the Premier League.

Villa earned 27 points in Gerrard’s last 25 matches for the club while they have since claimed 26 points in just 13 games under the former Arsenal boss.

There is still cautious optimism amongst Villa supporters that they could yet sneak into the European players this season, although competition is incredibly fierce.
