Steven Gerrard may help Tottenham star Harry Kane get Bayern Munich transfer
Steven Gerrard’s reported pursuit of Sadio Mane could help Harry Kane land his dream move to Bayern Munich. Reports claim that the Tottenham striker is open to joining the Bundesliga champions, where winning the Champions League would be a strong possibility.
Bayern have seen two bids for Kane rejected by Spurs. The first is reported to have amounted to around £60million, while the second was an improved proposal of nearly £70m.
Both offers were strongly rebuffed by Spurs. The North Londoners are desperate to keep their star player despite him having just a year on his contract and seemingly little desire to extend his stay beyond the summer of 2024.
The German side will therefore need to lift their bid. Wide-ranging reports suggest that Spurs will refuse to sell for anything less than £120m.
Bayern could therefore rely on former Liverpool captain Gerrard to do them a huge favour. It is claimed that Gerrard’s Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq are interested in signing the ex-Reds forward Sadio Mane, who endured a difficult first season with the Bavarians.
According to 90min, Mane has become a target for Gerrard’s new side, who are not one of the four clubs recently bought by the Public Investment Fund. The Saudi team would likely need to pay a major fee for Mane, giving Bayern the funds to buy Kane.
The extra money would allow the German side to stump up Spurs’ asking price for the England captain. Thomas Tuchel would be able to land a club-record purchase of Kane, giving the former Chelsea head coach a major boost in his attempts to win another Champions League.
ESPN report that Kane is open to the idea of joining Bayern and believes they can win Europe’s top prize. The 29-year-old supposedly met with Tuchel in London to talk about a potential move.
But Bayern will need to submit a vastly improved third bid and will hope that any money received for Mane can help match Spurs’ asking price. It comes as Kane met with new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou for the first time.
I don’t think it’s my role to sit down and treat people in a manner because of their circumstances. I’m really big on treating everyone the same, and Harry has already entrenched himself in the history of this football club,” Postecoglou said of meeting Kane.
“He’s a very important part. He’s one of the premier strikers in the world and I want him involved. My conversation with him will be about how we can make this club successful, and I’ve got no doubts that what he wants as well.”
