Stranger Things Creators’ Next Supernatural Mystery Series Is Officially Headed to Netflix

Netflix has officially handed a series order to The Boroughs, a new supernatural mystery series excutive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer (better known as the Duffer brothers).

Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews, who co-created Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, will serve as creators and showrunners. Netflix first unveiled the project last July when it announced its overall deal with the Duffers’ production company Upside Down Pictures, but today’s news means the series is officially moving forward at the streamer.

The Boroughs will take place in a “seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert,” where “a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time,” per Netflix’s official logline.

“We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs, we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands,” the Duffers said in a statement. “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”

The Duffers’ Expanding Role at Netflix

Stranger Things may be ending with its upcoming fifth season, but it won’t be the last we see of the Upside Down. It was announced just earlier this month that the Duffers are worked on an animated Stranger Things series, and it was previously revealed that a live-action series is in the works as well.

But the Duffers’ collaboration with Netflix isn’t limited to The Boroughs and Stranger Things. They’re also working on another live-action adaptation of Death Note for the streamer, as well as an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Stranger Things Season 5.
