Stranger Things Writers Reveal Glimpse of Season 5 Script, Sparking Fan Theories

Stranger Things just revealed our first look at Season 5 with a glimpse of its script. Appearing on Twitter, the Stranger Things writers unveiled the very first lines in the Stranger Things Season 5 script — and it’s already got the fans talking.

“DARKNESS,” it reads. “The sound of COLD WIND. GROANING TREES. And… A CHILD’S VOICE. Singing a familiar song:”

Unfortunately, that’s all we’re getting for now, but it’s enough to get fans theorizing about what exactly is going on. “A FLASHBACK OF WILL IN THE UPSIDE DOWN IS HOW S5 STARTS,” said one fan on Twitter. Meanwhile, a Reddit thread has gone further, with some fans suggesting it’s a callback to one of the best songs in Season 1. “I’m guessing it’s a flashback to season 1 and Will singing Should I Stay or Should I Go,” said one fan.

Although nothing’s certain, many fans are assuming this is a flashback. And the theories get more and more thought out the further you dig. “So the question is, would this be when El found Will using the walkie at the end of 1×03? Or would this be after El found Will in Castle Byers and we saw him a moment later by himself singing, before being ambushed by the demogorgan in 1×07?” asked another fan. “I’m hoping for the latter because that was literally the only scene outright we got of Will in the UD, and even though it was nice to have something, they cut us off before we could find out the details of what followed, leading him to being found in the library in the finale.”

Over at the official Stranger Things Twitter account, their bio was recently changed to showcase old quotes from the show, prompting many fans to think that this is a hint about the possible flashback.

“Pretty sure all of these sequences will be coming from Will’s POV,” said another fan. “This confirms what a lot of people theorized regarding potential 1983 UD flashbacks with a de-aged Noah Schnapp. Season 4 was all about us re-living with Eleven her lost memories at the lab, and now it’s time to find out what Will really saw over there.”

The tiny snatch of script was revealed on November 6, aka Stranger Things day. Obviously, there’s not a lot to take away from this tiny snippet of script, except that it’s dark and there’s likely some creepy music playing – that or Running Up That Hill. We also know what the first episode of Season 5 is called: The Crawl.

Stranger Things is coming to an end with its upcoming fifth and final season. Although its writers are clearly back at work, production remains delayed due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

IGN’s Stranger Things Season 4 Part 2 review gave it 9/10 and said: “The final two episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are the series at its most emotional, action-packed, and tension-filled. There are as many thrills as you could hope for, but also quite a few lovely, tender moments between characters we’ve come to care so much about. There are so many series-best performances that it’s hard to single out any in particular, but it’s especially nice to see Noah Schnapp’s Will get a bit more attention than he did in Part 1. It still ends up feeling a tad bit unwieldy – a hard thing to avoid when juggling this many characters and storylines – but ultimately, these four hours pack in just about everything a Stranger Things fan could ask for.”
