Street Fighter 6 rollback netcode is being built from scratch

Stick your laggy Blanka rolls

Capcom has confirmed that its exciting new scrapper Street Fighter 6 will indeed have fully redesigned rollback netcode, and will not simply port the online infrastructure that powers previous entry Street Fighter V. The news was revealed by SF6 director Takayuki Nakayama in an interview with IGN. (Suspiciously, it appears that the interview has since been made private.)

“SFV also had rollback netcode, but SF6 will have rollback netcode [but] it’s not going to be the same as what we had in SFV,” said Nakayama (in dictation recorded by Eventhubs). “This is something that they’re building from scratch. There’s a lot of effort being put into the development of the netcode.”

Street Fighter V has had something of a rocky history with online play. Casting our minds back, the game’s online connectivity was almost diabolical at launch, especially in the Americas. This would soon give way to moderate-to-good netcode across the board, with only excellent netcode being experienced by those with high-speed internet connections. The news that SF6 will have modern, fully redesigned rollback netcode will allow the community to be cautiously optimistic. After all, a fighter is only as strong as its online capabilities.

In addition to the above news, the official Street Fighter Twitter announced its intention to “go dark” for the near future, having spent the last few days rolling out clips, videos, and tidbits pertaining to Street Fighter 6, its features, and character backstories. Street Fighter fans ate well last week, seeing plenty of gameplay footage and perhaps more information than Capcom had intended. Tonight will see Capcom host its summer gaming live stream. I hope we see a new character reveal, but otherwise, it seems that SF 6 will be going a little quiet for the immediate future.
