Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Peaches Is Officially a Hit, Debuting on the Billboard Hot 100

Bowser’s romantic ode to Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, aptly named “Peaches” (sung and co-written by Jack Black), has officially become a hit, landing on the Billboard Hot 100.

Billboard tweeted that “Peaches” debuted at No. 83 on this week’s Hot 100 chart, making it the first song in Black’s solo career to land on the list. He previously debuted at No. 78 with the 2006 song “The Pick of Destiny” as a member of the rock duo Tenacious D, who starred in the movie of the same name.

On the week The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted in theaters, Black told IGN in an interview that he was hesitant to sing a love song through Bowser because he didn’t know there would be any musical numbers involved until one year into the voice recording process, when directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic approached him on the subject, and he was very protective of his music career with Tenacious D. Eventually, after learning of Bowser’s sensitive side, he produced the song with John Spiker, who helped turned the 30-second sample into a full song (split into two parts in the film).

“I sent it back to them and they were like, yes, they were over the moon. And then I was super stoked. And then I was also like, is this really going to be in the movie? And then by God, they put it in the movie,” Black said.

And is “Peaches” in the running for awards glory as well? It’s possible. Universal previously confirmed to Variety that it’s eligible for Best Original Song Oscar consideration.
