Suzume Expected to Earn Rs. 10 Crore at Indian Box Office
Anime is growing fast in the Indian movie market, and Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume is expected to earn big at the box office.
Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, the executive director of PVR INOX, shared the company’s predictions for Suzume’s box office collection. Speaking to Financial Times Online, Bijli stated that PVR expects the film to gross approximately Rs. 10 crore (equivalent to $1.2 million) overall.
Suzume, which released in India on April 21, is PVR Picture’s biggest release across 250 screens in 85 cities. The anime film is expected to do well due to the popularity of director Shinkai here. Bijli added that PVR Pictures aims to end the year with over Rs. 30 crore ($3.6 million) in box office collections for anime films.
Suzume has been a massive hit, and has climbed up the ranks of the highest-grossing Japanese films. In IGN’s review of Suzume, we praised the film for its “strong cast, thought-provoking plot, and wonderful animation,” and called it “one of the most captivating animated films released this year.” The film is currently sitting at the fourth position with $298 million in worldwide gross, behind Shinkai’s own 2016 film, Your Name with $382 million.
However, the Indian box office numbers are dwarfed when compared to other markets such as China, which attracted more than 10 million viewers in just three days of Suzume’s release, with box office revenue of the film reaching $50 million in just the first weekend collection.
