Tata Tiago EV launch soon, tipped to be one of India’s cheapest EVs
Tata currently sells the Xpres-T EV, the Tata Tigor EV, the Tata Nexon EV Prime and the Tata Nexon EV MAX in India. The EV hatchback is expected to reduce the cost of entry into the lineup and could amass huge potential in the mass market EV segment. Tata launched the Xpres-T EV in India in July 2021 at Rs 9.75 lakh, which is currently their cheapest EV in India.
Tata Motors to soon launch the Tata Tiago EV in India
The Tata Tiago EV, based on the Tata Tiago ICE-powered hatchback, was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Indian automaker has now announced that it could soon launch the product in India.
The Tata Tiago EV would use similar components as used in the Tata X-Press T EV and the Tata Tigor EV. The X-Press T EV uses a low-powered motor and is available for fleets only. The Tata Tigor EV, based on the Ziptron architecture, uses a higher power motor and bigger battery and is available for private buyers.
To keep prices as low as possible, Tata Motors could deploy the 41bhp electric motor that is available on the Tata X-Press T EV. It is paired with a 16.5kWh battery pack that gets 165km of claimed range and a 21.5kWh option and is good for 213km of the claimed range.
However, Tata Motors might integrate the Tata Tiago with the Ziptron powertrain as on the Tigor EV, and the vehicle could benefit from the 75hp of power and 170Nm of torque that the motor is capable of. It could be paired to the 26kWh lithium-ion battery pack and get a range of around 306km. However, Tata splits the battery pack in two on the Tigor EV, and one part resides in the boot. Given the smaller boot on the hatch, it’s a matter of time before we get to see how Tata engineers decide to implement the battery.
Further details will be available once we get closer to the actual launch. The pricing on the Tata Tiago EV could be very attractive and could be kept around Rs 10 to 12 lakh (ex-showroom).
