Teenage footballer Priya R dies after botched up surgery, amputation | Chennai News – Times of India
CHENNAI: Teenage footballer Priya R, whose right leg had to be amputated after doctors at a government hospital botched up a ligament surgery last week, died of multi-organ failure at 7.15am on Tuesday.
Minutes after her death, the state health minister, Ma Subramanian, announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family and a government job for one of her three siblings.

The 18-year-old freshman underwent arthroscopy surgery at Periyar Nagar Government Peripheral Hospital to repair the ligament on her right knee on November 7. After the second follow-up surgery, she was lying unconscious and on life support in the intensive care unit of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).
She passed away on Tuesday following complications, including heart, kidney and liver failure, the health department announced.
“She complained of pain in her legs hours after her November 7 surgery. I wish the doctors had taken her complaints seriously. The complications of the surgery killed her,” said her brother Lawrence, who is a sports equipment salesman.
“That night she woke up thrice with complaints of severe pain but was given medicines that sent her back to sleep,” her relatives said.
At 9am the next day, doctors shifted her to RGGGH, as they suspected a ‘blood clot’.
After a series of tests and treatments, doctors told the family that tissues on her right leg were dead, and amputation was the only way to save her life.
On November 9, doctors removed her right leg. She underwent revision surgery on Monday to remove more dead tissues. Since then, she has been on a ventilator.
“The muscle breakdown led to an increase in presence of a protein called myoglobin in the urine and elevated creatinine levels. This led to kidney, liver, and heart. Her blood pressure dropped. Despite intensive care, including dialysis through the night, her condition deteriorated,” said RGGGH dean Dr E Theranirajan.
