Ten Hag gives worrying Martinez update after Man Utd and Sevilla draw

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has provided an early injury update on Lisandro Martinez following his side’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Sevilla on Thursday night. The Argentina international was forced out of the game late on and stretchered down the tunnel. Now, it looks as though a spell on the sidelines awaits the 25-year-old.

Manchester United raced into a 2-0 lead against Sevilla, with Marcel Sabitzer netting a brilliant brace.

But the La Liga giants were able to claim a draw late on thanks to own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire.

To compound United’s misery, Martinez was forced out of the game before the late comeback – with the Argentina international carried off the pitch by two Sevilla players before being stretchered down the tunnel.

The centre-back was visibly distraught as he was carried away from the field of play.

And Ten Hag has now opened up on the defender, admitting that it looks like his No 6 will be out of action for the foreseeable future with a worrying update.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

“When Licha Martinez drops out with no opponent involved, it doesn’t look that great,” said the 53-year-old. “It doesn’t look that great. We have to wait, I can’t say in this moment.

“Same with Rapha [Varane]. I didn’t speak with him after the game but I know of an injury complaint over the last weeks so we have to see how it is now.”

On his side’s overall performance, Ten Hag rued United’s failure to kill Sevilla off and admitted they lost ‘rhythm’ as the game went on.

“We had the game in hand. We were 2-0 up. We should have scored three or four even,” he stated.

“Then some unlucky moments with injuries. Had to make some subs with Varane at half time and Martial because it’s his first start in a long time.

“Injuries saw us lose the rhythm of the game. First half we played very well with a lot of belief. We should have scored more.”

United goalscorer Sabitzer also spoke out.

And the Austria international admitted he was struggling to comprehend the result given how the Red Devils had dominated the early stages of the game.

“I have problems finding the right words,” said the midfielder, who now has three goals for the club.

“It was like a rollercoaster game.

“We had to finish the game off and at the end it’s a draw and it’s not what we wanted.

“We had the chances [to finish the game off]. We controlled the game but unfortunately we gave easy goals away.

“We cannot concede these kinds of goals and we’re really disappointed now.

“In a competition like this you have to be focused until the end. The last minutes were a bit strange. Two stupid goals.

“That’s not what we wanted. When you are 2-0 up at home you have to get it done.”

Now, United will need a quick return to winning ways with the fixtures continuing to come thick and fast.

They’ll lock horns with Nottingham Forest on Sunday looking to bounce back and boost their chances of finishing in the Premier League top four.

United will then go up against Sevilla in the second leg next Thursday (8pm).

And they’re scheduled to lock horns with Brighton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup just three days after that.

United remain on course for a cup treble but, with Martinez out for the foreseeable, winning more silverware will be easier said than done.
