Ten Hag should be outraged by four Man Utd players after Sevilla loss
Manchester United endured one of their worst nights of the season at Stadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan as Sevilla took full advantage of a pitiful display to come away with a resounding 3-0 victory. Youssef En-Nesyri bagged twice and Loic Bade notched the other to send the Red Devils crashing out of the Europa League at the quarter-final stage. Express Sport takes you through Erik ten Hag’s four worst players on a dreadful evening…
David de Gea
Undoubtedly United’s worst player on the night, De Gea’s first calamitous moment came when he played Harry Maguire into a sticky situation with just over seven minutes on the clock. The defender then lost the ball which led to En-Nesyri’s opener, and while Maguire will take plenty of the stick, the goalkeeper should have known better than to find the Englishman while he was surrounded by opposition players.
From there, De Gea failed to inspire confidence in the already-nervous defenders in front of him. He didn’t cover himself in glory for Sevilla’s second goal of the night either, as Bade’s header looped over his head in slow motion before bouncing off the bottom of the crossbar and crossing the line.
The icing on the cake for De Gea, who is reportedly closing in on a new contract at Old Trafford, came when he bizarrely rushed off his goal line and fumbled a first touch to give En-Nesyri his second gift-wrapped goal of the night.
Harry Maguire
The error leading to Sevilla’s opener was a painful one for the former Leicester City man, who got a rare opportunity to sport the captain’s armband after being left on the peripheries of Ten Hag’s squad for much of this season.
On the whole, United’s defence was shambolic without the presence of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, which is hardly an endorsement for the Red Devils to keep Maguire at Old Trafford beyond the end of the campaign.
Casemiro
The Brazilian looked decidedly rusty compared to his usual high standards, which could be expected after serving his second long suspension of the season. More disciplinary issues cropped up against Sevilla, too, as he picked up a yellow card which would have made him ineligible for first leg of the semi-final.
United’s dreadful performance meant it didn’t come to that, and the usually commanding Casemiro was nowhere to be seen for much of the game as Sevilla star Ivan Rakitic routinely found joy in the middle of the park. Things could have been even worse for the former Real Madrid man, as his misplaced pass preceded Lucas Ocampos’ goal, which was eventually overturned for offside.
Jadon Sancho
The former Borussia Dortmund man was under pressure to perform on the left wing with Marcus Rashford poised and ready on the bench, not to mention the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga and Facundo Pellistri gunning for minutes out wide.
Needless to say, Sancho didn’t take his opportunity. He lost possession multiple times in the opening exchanges and that set the tone for the rest of the match, during which he did not work hard enough to track back and was consequently hauled off by Ten Hag at the interval.
