The 2019 game of the year is free of charge for a limited time only

Winner of countless game of the year awards when it launched back in 2019, Remedy’s supernatural shooter Control is currently free to download and play for the entirety of the weekend. As part of Microsoft’s Free Play Days promotion, Xbox Gold subscribers can access Control from now until 7.59am BST on Monday, June 12. That’s just enough time to play through the excellent campaign, which even contains one or two Alan Wake easter eggs. If you don’t manage to finish the campaign before the Free Play Days promotion comes to an end, your progress will carry over should you decide to purchase the full game.

To start playing Control for free, simply search for the game on the Xbox Store and choose the option to install.

Provided you’re signed in to your Xbox account and have an active Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, you won’t need to pay a penny to access the game.

“After a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an otherworldly threat, you become the new Director struggling to regain Control,” reads the official description.

“From developer Remedy Entertainment, this supernatural third person action-adventure will challenge you to master the combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.

“Control is Jesse Faden’s story and her personal search for answers as she grows into the role of the Director. The world of Control has its own story, as do the allies Jesse meets along the way. Jesse works with other Bureau agents and discovers strange experiments and secrets.”

Speaking of free games, Epic is currently giving away co-op shooter Payday 2 on the Epic Games Store. And unlike Control on Xbox, Payday 2 is yours to download and keep.

All you need to do is create an Epic Games account, visit the Payday 2 store page and redeem the game by clicking the ‘GET’ option.

“PAYDAY 2 is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter that once again lets gamers don the masks of the original PAYDAY crew – Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains – as they descend on Washington DC for an epic crime spree,” reads the official description.

You can redeem Payday 2 from now until 4pm BST on June 15, at which point it will be replaced by Guacamelee! 2.
