The Flash’s box office turnover is not looking as great as the hype the DC movie generated before its release. The Flash recorded a drop of almost 72% in ticket sales as compared to its opening weekend. Adding to this blow, the entire movie got leaked online on Sunday, June 25th.
The Flash movie leaks on Twitter
One week into The Flash’s release in theatres worldwide, the movie got uploaded in its entirety of 2 hours 24 minutes on Twitter on June 25th. It was live for eight hours before it was taken down at 1 pm EST, during which it garnered 1.7 million views. According to latest reports, the account @BriYoshFR which posted the video is now suspended, but the damage has been done.
As the days ahead will give us definite numbers for how hard The Flash will ultimately take the hit of this massive leak, the movie however has never been one to stay away from controversies from the very start. Starting with the series of leaks of some of the biggest surprises that the movie had packed in.
Director and Producer Andy and Barbara Muschietti on Nicolas Cage cameo leak
Nicolas Cage is one of the biggest of the many stars to have appeared in cameos in The Flash. Cage portrayed Superman from an alternate timeline, which was leaked before the movie even released. Did it ultimately have a role to play in The Flash’s ticket sales? While there are some who don’t fear spoilers, and still go on to watch content to experience those reveals for themselves, there are also many who would refuse to watch the content entirely.
On that note, in an interview with The Discourse Podcast, Director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti shared their thoughts on the same. Andy Muscheitti explained how his statement about Nicolas Cage’s cameo was never meant to be for the public before the movie released.
“I would’ve never. It was a leak unfortunately, but didn’t seem to affect much. Of course, I would’ve loved that to be a surprise, but the truth is that the movie has a lot of surprises apart from the Nic Cage thing.”
His sister Barbara Muschietti however ‘jokingly’ expressed her disappointment with this statement,
“I’ll tell you, that leak hurt. We were not happy. And when all of this over, I’ll name names.”
Supergirl actor Sasha Calle on working with Ezra Miller
Other than the leaks, there’s also the controversy surrounding the lead star Ezra Miller and the trouble that they ran into in general, and with Warner Bros earlier last year. The Flash co-star Sasha Calle, who portrays Supergirl in the movie was asked about her experience working with Miller in a recent interview with New York Times. It was a question Calle cleverly steered clear of, ultimately changing the topic entirely with her answer.
“I spent a lot of time with my stunt team from the moment I arrived to the moment I left. And it was incredible being with my stunt team. I can’t not talk about them. I swear to you, they were my family through and through.”
So, with all of this said, are we getting a sequel to The Flash, with Miller returning to reprise his role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe reboot?
Andy Muschietti on The Flash (2023) sequel antagonist and Nora Allen’s murderer
While the uncertainty around this continues to hang in the air, Andy Muschietti has already talked about the main antagonist the movie will feature.
The Flash majorly deals with Barry Allen’s back story about the loss of his mother, but we never get to know who actually murdered Nora Allen. In the comic books, it was Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse Flash who murdered Nora Allen. Muschietti has confirmed in an interview with The Playlist that he intends to keep that bit of the story as is. He said,
“Well, Reverse Flash is the elephant in the room, right? It feels like you can’t make another movie without addressing the one that, in all accounts, is the murderer of Barry’s mom. So, it feels like the big villain. I have my own favorites, but that’s another story – I’d like to see The Turtle at some point. The slowest man on Earth. Gorilla Grodd, of course. And many more.”
The Flash released on 15th June, 2023 and is currently screening in theatres across the world.
