The Flash Director Says Ezra Miller Shouldn’t Be Replaced if There’s a Sequel

The Flash star Ezra Miller shouldn’t be replaced if there’s a sequel, according to the film’s director.

During an interview with The Discourse podcast as reported by The Playlist, Andy Muschietti stated that the troubled DC star should still be Barry Allen despite their recent issues.

“If [a sequel] happens, yes,” he said about Miller’s potential return. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”

Producer Barbara Muschietti added: “In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional. Ezra gave everything for this role – physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.”

The Flash star found themselves at the center of a personal controversy following a spate of bad behavior, with troubles including felony burglary as well as disappearing while facing legal issues in Massachusetts, Hawaii, and North Dakota.

It was thought that Warner Bros. was looking to part ways with Miller with the company planning for multiple scenarios involving The Flash – one of which would have seen the project scrapped.

However, back in August last year, Miller issued an apology for their behavior and apparently met with Warner Bros. executives to discuss the future of their DC role. Obviously, this seems to have smoothed things over, with Miller continuing to headline the upcoming superhero movie regardless.

Andy Muschietti also gave an update recently regarding Miller’s state of mind.

“Ezra is well now,” he confirmed. “We’re all hoping that they get better. They’re taking steps to recovery. [They’re] dealing with mental health issues, but [they’re] well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they’re very committed to getting better.”

Early reactions to The Flash have been fairly positive, and Muschietti claims Miller’s performance was one of the best he’s seen.

“They are full of incredible emotions, and they bring them to the set every time,” he said. “[They] are an incredible comedian also, which is something that I wasn’t fully prepared for. I mean, I saw them in movies before. I thought they were funny, but when I started working with them I realized that they are an incredible comedian.”
