With no funding milestones to celebrate, Great Learning started off by celebrating learning milestones. After the pandemic, the demand for upskilling and continued education shifted from job-readiness courses to lifelong learning across disciplines. The company realised it was the right time to accelerate expansion, and Byju’s was quick on the draw.

On the field, the big names of cricket had gathered in England. It was the World Cup, after all. Off the field, that summer of 2019, another meeting of titans — this time from the world of ed-tech — was on. Byju Raveendran met Mohan Lakhamraju of Great Learning for the first time. It was just a hi-hello meeting, but two years later, Byju’s would end up buying Great Learning for USD600 million, with another USD400 million earmarked for growing
