The great Mac rush: How Twitter, Uber and others are buying the latest MacBook for some employees – Times of India

Apple introduced the new MacBook Pro models along with the latest M1 processors at an event last month. The new MacBook Pros have received rave reviews and are considered really powerful machines — arguably the fastest you can buy. A report by CultofMac suggests that a few tech companies are making a beeline to buy these machines for their engineers and other employees.
John Szumski, Twitter developer, recently tweeted that all of Twitter’s iOS and Android engineers are getting the latest M1 Max-powered MacBook Pros. “I’m excited to be rolling out fully loaded M1 Max MBPs to all of Twitter’s iOS & Android engineers! We’re seeing improvements in both top line performance and thermal throttling that currently plague our Intel builds,” he tweeted.
Szumski said that it’s not an easy decision as it may seem like buying new laptops for employees. “Getting to this point was a huge team effort from IT, architecture, and tooling teams to validate all the key parts of the business still operate correctly on ARM and Monterey,” he added.
Twitter isn’t the only company that’s making the switch to the new MacBook Pros. Reddit believes that buying the new Apple laptops in bulk means long-term savings. “We recently found that the new 2021 M1 MacBooks cut our Android build times in half,” Jameson Williams, a Reddit engineer said. He further explained that if the company buys for a team of nine people laptops worth $32,000 then they end up saving over $100,000 in productivity in the next year. “Engineering hours are much more expensive than laptops,” Williams said, as per the report by CultofMac.
E-commerce platform Shopify too has announced that it’s getting the new MacBook Pros for its employees. Tobi Lütke, CEO, Shopify, revealed this in a tweet. “That was a really fun thing to announce. We put in a huge order for Apple Silicon. We are toolmakers here at Shopify. We celebrate and appreciate others who make brilliant tools. Those inspire us to do better ourselves,” he said in a tweet.
The report also says that Uber too has been stocking up on the new MacBook Pro units for its employees.
