The Last of Us on HBO Is So Far Outpacing House of the Dragon’s Viewership

Viewers streamed a grand total of 837 million minutes of HBO’s The Last of Us TV adaptation between January 22 and 27, making it more popular than HBO’s House of the Dragon during its equivilent period.

The figures come courtesy of the Nielsen top 10 streaming charts, which track the number of minutes watched per show across all episodes for each given week.

The Last of Us was able to secure sixth position on the list with its 837 million streaming minutes — an impressive showing considering that only two episodes of the video game adaptation had been released during the data collection window.

As reported by Deadline, HBO’s House of the Dragon achieved a cumulative 741 million minutes of watchtime during the equivilent two episode timeframe in 2022.

Disney+ was also able to break into the top 10 list for January 22 and 27 with the children’s show Bluey. However, the remainder of the list was dominated by Netflix offerings, including the comedy drama Ginny & Georgia, which snatched first place with 1,804 million minutes of watch time over its 20 episodes.

Viewing figures for The Last of Us have grown week on week since the show’s January 15 premiere, which attracted a healthy 22 million domestic viewers.

This strong growth, paired with the show’s overwhelmingly positive critical and fan reception, was enough to secure a second season which will adapt the events of Neil Druckmann’s The Last of Us Part II.

IGN gave HBO’s The Last of Us a 9/10 for its first season, describing it as a “breathtaking adaptation of one of the most impactful stories told in video games”.
