The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Wasn’t Influenced by Major Titles Like Elden Ring

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom made a significant impact on the gaming industry with its vibrant and immersive RPG open-world, along with new gameplay features and enhancements. While many might assume that the developers drew inspiration from recent award-winning RPGs like Elden Ring, that wasn’t the case at all.

In an interview with RTL Nieuws (via Exputer), Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the developers of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, addressed this topic by explaining that they didn’t have the opportunity to draw inspiration from other projects due to their busy schedule. They also emphasised that their focus has always been on creating original concepts.

Fujibayashi stated that they didn’t have much opportunity to play other games as they were too busy working on Tears of the Kingdom. Furthermore, he added that even if they did have the chance to play other games, they wouldn’t reuse any ideas from them. When the team develops a game, they focus on creating a general concept and then innovate upon it.

Aonuma added that there might be situations where their game could bear similarities to other existing titles. However, he emphasised that he would never attempt to incorporate other people’s ideas into their game. Aonuma takes pride in using only original ideas. He then shared an anecdote about his experience working on the 3D system for Link Between Worlds. He expressed his joy in seeing Nintendo President Iwata being pleasantly surprised by the jumping mechanics of Link.
