The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Set Catches Fire in Latest Incident

A fire reportedly broke out on the set of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power while the show was filming its second season in the UK.

According to Variety, “plumes of smoke” were seen on Monday at the Bray Studios set in Windsor where the series was being filmed. The fire was reportedly started by an electrical fire that broke out in a warehouse on the outskirts of the backlot, causing the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service to respond and put out the fire. Filming only stopped for an hour and then resumed as planned.

No members of the cast or crew had to evacuate the studio site, and it appears nobody was injured.

A statement from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that they received reports of the fire at 12:26 pm local time. The service then responded with crews from three different stations, who extinguished the fire thanks to three hose reels and a main jet. Firefighters were on the scene for around four and a half hours. An investigation into how the fire started will take place soon.

The fire is the newest incident that has plagued the massive fantasy series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The show, whose first season had a budget of $465 million, has recently been seeing headlines after a horse died on set in March, causing PETA to take a stand against the series. The animal activism group called on Amazon Studios — and the wider world of TV production — to stop using real animals in productions.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a production horse died on March 21,” an Amazon spokesperson previously said in a statement. “The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals. The trainer was not in costume and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure.”

Season 2 of The Rings of Power is currently in production, but no release date has been revealed yet. The new season will see Game of Thrones actor Ciarán Hinds and James Bond star Rory Kinnear join the cast. Tanya Moodle of Motherland and Sherlock will also be joining the ensemble alongside Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, and Nicholas Woodeso.
