The Mandalorian Isn’t Building to a ‘Specific Ending,’ Middle Chapter in a ‘Much Larger Story’

It seems there’s no end in sight for Mando and Grogu’s journey. Season 3 of The Mandalorian kicks off on March 1, but co-creator Jon Favreau assures fans that Din Djarin’s story has a lot more to come.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Favreau discussed whether he already has an ending for the Disney+ series in mind.

“No, I don’t – I think the beauty of this is that it’s a middle chapter of a much larger story,” he said. “And though we’ll have resolution over time with these characters, I think that how these characters fit into the larger scope and scale, but it’s not like there’s a finale that we’re building to that I have in mind. Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while, and I really love telling stories in their voice, and I love the way the adventures unfold and I’m looking forward to doing much more.”

We already know that Mando’s story will go on past Season 3, too; Favreau recently confirmed that Season 4 has already been written.

“We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully-formed story, so we had mapped it, out [co-creator] Dave [Filoni] and I, and then slowly you just write each episode,” Favreau told BFM TV. “So I was writing during post-production, because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

Favreau, Filoni and co. have turned The Mandalorian into a fan-favorite hit, one of the only Star Wars products that began without any pre-existing characters to lean on for support. Since its relatively humble beginning, the series has grown to great heights, seeing the likes of Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka and Boba Fett playing key roles in Mando’s journey.

Season 3, which sees Grogu and Mando reunited thanks to their two-episode takeover of The Book of Boba Fett, looks to continue growing the mythology around Pedro Pascal’s beloved protagonist.

“What started off as just new characters going to new planets and we were introducing the audience to a smaller story – we’ve gotten to know a lot of different Mandalorians along the way, we found out that not all of them are seeing eye-to-eye,” Favreau told Total Film. “There’s a lot of questions that have to be answered and hopefully all of it comes together in this season as they return to Mandalore and we figure out how this Mandalorian culture evolves past this critical point in their history.”
