The Nun II proved to be a bit too scary for A Haunting in Venice as it held off Kenneth Branagh’s latest film to win its second domestic weekend box office with $14.7 million in ticket sales.
The Nun II saw a 55% drop from its opening weekend performance of $32.6 million, and the film reached $55.5 million domestically. It also crossed $100 million internationally and has earned $158.8 million globally.
A Haunting in Venice did put up a good fight, however, as it just barely lost by bringing in $14.5 million. In this new film, Branagh, who also stars once again as detective Hercule Poirot, is retired and attends a seance where one of the guests is murdered. As any detective worth his name would do, he springs into action and works to uncover the killer.
In our A Haunting of Venice review, we said, “An off-kilter horror-comedy told with breakneck momentum, A Haunting in Venice is a wild stylistic departure from Kenneth Branagh’s previous Poirot mysteries. However, it continues the series’ strange evolution as a tribute to the iconic Belgian sleuth; Branagh cares more about Poirot than any living person, and it shows.”
A Haunting in Venice added another $22.7 million overseas and its global tally now sits at $37.2 million
The Equalizer 3 took third place with $7.2 million, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 placed fourth with $4.7 million, and Barbie rounded out the top five with ticket sales of $3.9 million. Barbie, which is now available digitally, has brought in $626.1 million domestically and $1.4 billion worldwide.
