The Super Mario Bros. Movie in Japan
It’s no surprise that The Super Mario Bros. Movie did so well in the country. The Mario franchise was born in Japan, so success was likely in the cards. It’s still quite a feat to deliver on the promise for a massive franchise such as Mario. So far, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned $1.279 billion worldwide. The movie was produced by American animation company, Illumination.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s performance at the domestic box office has been even more staggering. The Mario video-game-based adaptation has earned $560.94 million at the time of writing. Interestingly, the movie has a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes and has broken the record for the highest-grossing movie with a rotten score. The movie is also the most successful video game adaptation movie of all time.
The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie does open up possibilities for other Nintendo video games to get adapted such as The Legend of Zelda. There are other video game adaptations movies and TV shows also in the works including Sonic the Hedgehog 3, BioShock, Borderlands, and the recently announced God of War.
