The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Sony CEO Calls it a “Beautiful and Wonderful IP”

It is very rare for competitors to appreciate the work of their rivals, however it isn’t impossible. The same has just taken place between the two biggest competitors in the gaming market in Sony and Nintendo.

Recently, Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony talked about the new Mario movie. After watching the movie, Yoshida called it a “beautiful and wonderful IP” and spoke about how he played Mario intensely almost 30 years ago. Moreover, he also spoke about how lovable IPs have better longevity and can last for “30, 50, or 100 years”.

It isn’t a surprise that Sony’s CEO has reacted in such a manner towards the movie as it has been doing wonders in the box office. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the 10th animated film to cross the $1 billion mark, which it managed to achieve within 26 days. Moreover, it is also the third Illumination movie to cross the $1 billion mark, and it’s also the seventh biggest Universal movie of all time, beating the likes of Jurassic World Dominion and the original Despicable Me.

These comments were shared during Sony’s recent investor relations meeting. It seems as though Sony has been motivated with Nintendo’s latest feat and now hopefully will work towards creating a new, adaptation of their own. Which Sony IP do you think should be adapted next?
